WDC’s journey

Initiated by the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA), the WDC was created in 2000 to represent the diamond industry in the Kimberley Process. The KP was established the same year with the endorsement of the United Nations, in response to a series of civil wars in Western Africa, financed by the trade in rough diamonds.

The KP, through its tripartite structure (governments, the Civil Society and the WDC) manages the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which verifies the non-conflict origin of rough diamonds that are traded.

The strength of the WDC lies in its diverse membership. From mining companies to retail jewelers, influential trade associations to individual enterprises and service providers, the WDC offers a platform that represents the entire natural diamond industry.

The WDC is led by four Officers elected by a 20-member Board of Directors, which is chosen by the WDC membership. This structure ensures equal representation for every segment of the industry. The Board also approves the appointment of the Executive Director, who manages the WDC’s day-to-day operations. Governance is vested in the WDC Bylaws.

The WDC’s financial foundation is built on membership fees, structured according to members’ roles within the diamond industry. This tiered approach enables active participation from both major players and smaller enterprises.
