What is the Kimberley Process?

The Kimberley Process (KP) is the international forum dedicated to eliminating conflict diamonds from the global trade. It was established in May 2000 in  Kimberley, South Africa, at a conference supported by the United Nations to address the problem of rough diamonds financing civil conflict in Africa.

The KP developed the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), launched in January 2003. It certifies the legitimate origin of rough diamonds so as to halt the trade in conflict goods.

Today, the KP comprises 86 member governments, working in a tripartite coalition with civil society Observers and the WDC, which represents the industry.

Together, they collaborate to formulate rules regulating all imports and exports of rough diamonds. Each government then develops its own border control and customs legislation accordingly.

The KPCS certification is the start of the diamond journey. Without it, there is no route to market for rough diamonds, and hence no trade in polished diamonds!

The Kimberley Process is the foundation upon which our industry operates.

contribute to the KP

By becoming a WDC member and joining the Kimberley Process Task Force (KPTF), our premier committee, you gain a voice in shaping KP policies and practices, and help design practical solutions for key industry issues.

You will engage directly with governments and the civil society, travel with us to KP gatherings twice a year, and learn to develop unified positions to protect our industry’s interests.

For a fascinating and rewarding experience with your fellow KPTF members!

WDC’S COMMITMENT TO THE KP

The WDC played a pivotal role in the creation of the KPCS, which originated from a working paper we first presented. Like the Civil Society Coalition, the WDC holds “Observer” status in the KP, where only member countries, known as “Participants,” have full voting rights.

The WDC is actively engaged in all KP activities, providing technical and financial support, participating in all the working groups and engaging in review visits to monitor that participating countries are compliant with the KP minimum requirements.

Since the inception of the KP, the WDC has chaired one of its key committees, the Working Group of Diamonds Experts. It also spearheaded the team that developed the long-awaited KP Secretariat, launched in 2024 in Gaborone, Botswana. The WDC currently is leading the discussions on the expansion of the “conflict diamonds” definition, which lies at the heart of the Kimberley Process.
