SELF-REGULATION FRAMEWORK

In January 2002, the WDC introduced the System of Warranties (SoW), a comprehensive framework for global self-regulation. Open to all industry members, the SoW mandates that diamond buyers and sellers include a warranty statement on their invoices, ensuring the diamonds originated from rough stones certified by the KP.

In 2021, the WDC broadened the SoW to include universally accepted principles, reflecting values of human and labor rights, and a firm stance against corruption and money laundering. These principles are detailed in the SoW Guidelines, solidifying the SoW as a valuable framework for industry self-regulation.

Due to its inclusiveness and accessibility, the SoW serves as the foundation and baseline for industry self-regulation.

APPLYING THE SoW

The SoW requires buyers and sellers of rough diamonds, polished diamonds and jewellery set with diamonds to include a warranty statement on their B2B invoices and memos each time  diamonds change hands.

The SoW guarantees the next buyer that the diamond originates from sources compliant with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) and adheres to essential responsible business practices, including human and labor rights, anti-money laundering, and anti-corruption measures.

To apply to the SoW, visit the dedicated WDC System of Warranties website and complete the online Self-Assessment questionnaire. If needed, you can access support through the Toolkit and our hotline.

After successfully submitting of your Self-Assessment, you will receive a unique identification number that you can display on invoices and memos along with the warranty statement.

By applying the SoW and passing down this warranty along the supply chain, you build trust and foster confidence with your business partners.

SoW WARRANTY STATEMENT

“The diamonds herein invoiced have been purchased [or “sourced”*] from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict, in compliance with United Nations Resolutions and corresponding national laws [where the invoice is generated**]. The seller hereby guarantees that these diamonds are conflict free and confirms adherence to the WDC SoW Guidelines.”

* “sourced” may be used by companies that do not purchase from open market, but source and aggregate diamonds from production facilities that are owned/partly owned by them.
** “where the invoice is generated” may be used by companies if they specifically want to reference the country of invoice issuance.
